This past week, the UK Model WHO held its third training session. Academy participants were split into two hour long sessions, a Chair Training Session run by our UK Model WHO Chapter Director Ivan Zhelyazkov, and a Delegate Training Session run by our UK Model WHO Training Co-Director Neha Khanderia with guest speaker Charles-Antoine Barbeau-Meunier.
Participants within the delegate track session learned key practices within an unmoderated caucus hearing from Charles-Antoine Barbeau-Meunier, a Resident Physician, M.A, and PhD Candidate from the University of Toronto. As a Canadian Youth Delegate to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) Charles brought a unique and insightful perspective in how to write a successful resolution paper by taking into account the negotiation process when a resolution is tabled at a general event. This session focused on resolution writing and women’s health. Participants brought forward the views and positions their chosen represented country had on the topic of women’s health and gained insight in how to strengthen their arguments in resolution writing.
Participants within the chair track session learned about resolution papers, perambulatory clauses, operative clauses, how amendments work, and how to write a successful resolution paper. Participants then had the chance to test out their knowledge through an interacting marking session. Participants within this session then joined the delegate track session and participated in an unmoderated caucus, proposing editorial changes to resolution papers, and participated in discussions of resolution sub-themes such as; Gender Equity & Education of Girls, Contraception & Family Planning, Gender Based Violence (Without FGM), Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Female Refugees & Access to Healthcare in Conflict Settings, and Access to Maternal Care.
The aim of this session was to provide both delegate and chair participants with the skills needed to participate in resolution writing, negotiations within resolution writing, and applying these skills by participating in an unmoderated caucus.
