This week’s session discussed the topic of ‘Global Surgery: Breaking Barriers’ with invited keynote speaker Dr. Kee B. Park, MD, MPH. Dr Park is a Neurosurgeon and Faculty member at Harvard University. He serves on the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Surgical Care and Anaesthesia where he advocates for and assists in the development of national surgical plans by WHO Member States.
This session began with a presentation by one of two of the UK Model WHO’s Training Co-Directors, Neha Khanderia. Neha addressed the need for global surgery in global health policy and discussed the social and economic impacts that barriers to global surgery have on the global community. Neha’s presentation provided participants with an in-depth understanding of the barriers impacting global surgery and urged for a collaborative approach in addressing these barriers.
Following this, our keynote speaker, Dr Park, spoke about his experiences establishing surgical infrastructure and neurosurgical training in countries worldwide – including North Korea, Ethiopia and Cambodia. As an expert in the field and consultant to the WHO, he provided participants with unique insight into recent resolutions formed to strengthen global capacity for neurosurgery.
Participants were inspired by Dr Park’s passion for addressing unmet neurosurgical needs and creating meaningful change at a global scale. This session will inform The Academy’s concluding miniature simulation on Global Surgery in the coming weeks.
